Trump Declares End to US Military Nation-Building Missions

At the US Military Academy graduation ceremony, President Donald Trump announced a decisive shift in American military policy, stating the US military will no longer engage in nation-building operations abroad.

He criticized the past two decades of deployments as misguided missions in countries that neither wanted nor needed a US military presence, calling such efforts a waste of resources and lives.

Criticism of Past Military Strategy

Trump condemned bipartisan political leaders for dragging the military into these nation-building “crusades” led by ineffective foreign leaders, while also subjecting American soldiers to what he described as “absurd ideological experiments” at home. He emphasized that this era has now ended, signaling a refocus on the military’s core mission of defeating adversaries and defending the nation.

Focus on Core Military Mission

The president highlighted his efforts to rebuild the US military into the most powerful force in history, asserting that the military will now concentrate on “crushing America’s adversaries” and protecting the American flag. Trump expressed a preference for peace and partnership with other nations but stressed readiness to confront enemies decisively.

Strategic Importance of Bagram Airbase and Afghanistan Policy Uncertainty

Meanwhile, Congressman Mike Bost, chairman of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, pointed to Bagram Airbase in Afghanistan as a vital strategic location for confronting adversaries like China and Russia. He criticized the US withdrawal from Afghanistan, implying it left a critical forward base behind.

Despite criticisms of the Afghanistan exit, the official US stance remains ambiguous. University professor Zakiullah Mohammadi noted that while the US appears to reject maintaining a military presence in Afghanistan, there is still an indication that some form of presence or influence might continue. The US Secretary of State has also stated that the future policy toward Afghanistan’s interim government is under review.

This announcement marks a significant policy shift away from prolonged nation-building toward a more focused military strategy centered on direct defense and adversary confrontation.
