Pakistan Upgrades Diplomatic Representation in Kabul to Ambassador

Pakistan has officially upgraded the head of its embassy in Kabul from chargé d’affaires to ambassador. This significant diplomatic move aims to strengthen bilateral relations and enhance cooperation between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The announcement was made by Pakistan’s Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, following his recent productive visit to Kabul.

Ishaq Dar emphasized that elevating the diplomatic mission is part of Pakistan’s broader strategy to expand interactions and cooperation with Afghanistan. “Relations with Afghanistan are on the path to improvement,” he stated, highlighting the positive momentum in bilateral ties.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan warmly welcomed Pakistan’s decision to raise its diplomatic representation. Zia Ahmad Takal, head of public relations at Afghanistan’s Foreign Ministry, announced that Afghanistan will reciprocate by upgrading its chargé d’affaires in Islamabad to ambassadorial status. He noted, “Elevating the level of diplomatic relations between Afghanistan and Pakistan will pave the way for expanding cooperation between the two countries across many sectors.”

Regional Context: China and Pakistan Stress International Mediation

This development coincides with a bilateral meeting between the foreign ministers of China and Pakistan, where both parties underscored the importance of international organizations in facilitating improved relations between Afghanistan and Pakistan. They regarded such mediation as an effective step toward building trust and enhancing cooperation in the region.

Sayed Moqaddam Amin, a political analyst, described Pakistan’s decision as a positive and hopeful move. He expressed optimism that this step would address existing challenges and deepen political and diplomatic ties, benefiting both countries’ vital interests.

Conversely, Salim Paigir, another political analyst, urged Pakistan to abandon any ambitions related to a “Greater Afghanistan” and respect Afghanistan’s sovereignty and resources. He emphasized that stable relations could be established if Pakistan recognizes that Afghan resources belong solely to the Afghan people.
