Family Seeks Justice After Polio Vaccinator Shot Dead in Paktia
Yesterday morning in Paktia, Abdul Salam, a young volunteer administering polio drops to children, was tragically shot and killed. This shocking incident has left the local community and the victim’s family demanding swift justice and retribution for the senseless murder.
Family Demands Retribution and Justice
The victim’s father, Dadgul, expressed his grief and determination:
“First, I want the killer to face retribution, because he committed murder and deserves to die.”
Similarly, Rahman Gul, Abdul Salam’s brother, shared details about the events leading up to the shooting. According to him, the vaccination team had not visited the area for three years, and a sign on a door read, “We don’t vaccinate or don’t have children.” On the day of the incident, the team announced their presence without entering the house, which angered a resident. The man confronted Abdul Salam, physically assaulted him, and after a verbal altercation, returned with a gun and opened fire despite attempts to flee.
Calls from Relatives for Punishment Under Islamic Law
Several relatives have voiced their demands for justice in line with Islamic law. Ghazi Jan, a family member, stated:
“The perpetrators killed him unjustly. Our demand of the Islamic Emirate is that the killer be punished as the Holy Quran commands. We want nothing else.”
Juma Gul, another relative, emphasized the need for quick action to prevent future violence:
“Our request of the government is that retribution be carried out as soon as possible, so others are not harmed by such individuals in the future, take a lesson, and refrain from such acts.”
Authorities Respond: Killer Arrested and Case Under Investigation
Officials from the Paktia Security Command have confirmed the arrest of the suspect. Munib Zadran, spokesperson for the Paktia Police Command, provided an update:
“Yesterday at 9:30 a.m., in the high-rise area of Gardez center, a citizen was killed following a verbal argument. Security forces immediately arrested the killer, and after preliminary investigations, he will be handed over to judicial and legal institutions. We assure all citizens, especially the victim’s family, that under Islamic Sharia, no one’s rights will be violated.”
Motive Remains Unclear Amid Rising Concerns
While the immediate circumstances of the shooting have been described, the underlying motive behind this tragic incident remains unclear. The community and authorities alike are eager for a thorough investigation to bring clarity and justice.
The killing of Abdul Salam highlights the challenges faced by health workers in conflict-affected regions and underscores the urgent need for protection and respect for those dedicated to public health. The family’s call for justice resonates deeply, reflecting a broader demand for peace and security in Paktia.
