Release of Over 1,500 Prisoners in Afghanistan for Eid al-Adha

The Supreme Court of Afghanistan announced that, on the occasion of Eid al-Adha, 1,559 prisoners have been released from prisons in eight provinces of the country. This action was carried out under the directive of the Chief Justice and the Head of the Supreme Court. In addition to the release of these prisoners, the sentences of 950 others have been reduced. This decision was made to commemorate this significant Islamic holiday and as part of efforts to mitigate punishments.

Kabul 24: According to an official statement from the Supreme Court released on Wednesday, the freed prisoners were from the provinces of Kabul, Nangarhar, Laghman, Panjshir, Parwan, Kapisa, Khost, and Nimroz. This move not only provides an opportunity for these individuals to reunite with their families but also reflects a humane approach toward the rehabilitation and reform of prisoners.

The Supreme Court emphasized that this decision was made after a thorough review of the prisoners’ files and confirmation of their eligibility for release or sentence reduction.

The release of prisoners ahead of Eid al-Adha, one of the most important Islamic holidays, has been widely welcomed. This action is seen as a positive step toward fostering compassion and forgiveness in society.
