Kazakhstan appointed Afghan Special Representative

According to media reports from Kazakhstan on June 16, 2025, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has appointed Yerkyn Tukumov as the country’s special representative for Afghanistan. This decision, announced by the Office of the President of Kazakhstan, reflects Kazakhstan’s efforts to strengthen diplomatic relations and foster constructive engagement with Afghanistan.

Yerkyn Tukumov, a seasoned diplomat, has extensive experience in foreign policy and strategic analysis. He has previously worked at the Kazakhstan Institute for Strategic Studies, an institution operating under the direct supervision of President Tokayev. This institute plays a pivotal role in shaping Kazakhstan’s domestic and international policies. Tukumov’s expertise in regional and strategic affairs makes him a fitting choice for this role, signaling Kazakhstan’s intent to take a more active stance in Afghanistan-related developments and Central Asian affairs.

Like many other countries, Kazakhstan has not formally recognized the Taliban government over the past four years. Nevertheless, the country has maintained close interactions with Afghanistan, focusing on expanding cooperation in trade, humanitarian aid, and infrastructure development. Afghanistan’s geopolitical position, particularly as a gateway to South Asian markets, holds significant importance for Kazakhstan. Tukumov is expected to leverage his diplomatic experience to enhance dialogue and coordination between Astana and Kabul.

This appointment comes at a critical time, as the region faces numerous security and economic challenges. Kazakhstan aims to contribute to regional stability and foster economic collaboration through this move.
