Britain Appoints First Female Head of MI6 to Lead Intelligence Agency

In a historic move, the United Kingdom has appointed a woman as the head of its Secret Intelligence Service, commonly known as MI6, for the first time.

Kabul 24: Established in 1909, MI6 is one of the world’s most powerful intelligence agencies, playing a critical role in safeguarding Britain’s national security and economic interests.

Belize Metrowly, a 47-year-old intelligence officer, has been selected as the new head of MI6. Currently leading the agency’s technology division, Metrowly is known within intelligence circles by the codename “Q,” reminiscent of the iconic character from the James Bond film series. She joined MI6 in 1999 and has spent much of her career in operational missions in sensitive regions such as the Middle East and Europe. Her extensive experience in intelligence operations and advanced technology management has made her a standout choice for this role.

The British government announced the appointment on Sunday, June 15, 2025. Metrowly is set to succeed Richard Moore, the current head of MI6, whose five-year term will conclude this autumn. Upon taking office, she will be known by the traditional codename “C,” reserved for MI6 chiefs. In response to her appointment, Metrowly stated, “It is an honor and privilege to be chosen to lead this distinguished service. I am committed to advancing MI6’s critical missions to protect the United Kingdom.”

The appointment comes at a time when Britain faces complex and unprecedented threats from countries such as Russia, China, and Iran. Prime Minister Keir Starmer, attending the G7 summit in Canada, emphasized the significance of Metrowly’s selection during this sensitive period. Without elaborating, he alluded to growing cross-border threats that demand vigilance and strong leadership in intelligence institutions.

MI6 is tasked with gathering foreign intelligence, supporting national security, promoting economic prosperity, and preventing serious crimes. The agency operates under the direct oversight of the Foreign Secretary and is accountable to the British government. While women have previously led the domestic intelligence service (MI5) and the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ), Metrowly’s appointment as the first female head of MI6 marks a historic milestone for the agency
