Japarov: Continuous Monitoring of Afghanistan Essential for Regional Stability

Sadyr Japarov, President of Kyrgyzstan, emphasized the critical need for close and ongoing monitoring of developments in Afghanistan to ensure regional stability and security during a recent meeting of the secretaries of the security councils of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) member states.

Speaking at the gathering, which included senior officials from member countries, Japarov called for a coordinated and cohesive approach among regional nations to address security challenges. He stated that a realistic and cautious assessment of the current situation, coupled with joint preventive measures, could significantly bolster regional stability. “Effective, comprehensive, and systematic solutions to security issues not only enhance regional security but also improve the quality of life for the people of our countries,” Japarov added.

The Kyrgyz President had previously voiced similar sentiments at the second China-Central Asia Summit in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan, where he underscored Kyrgyzstan’s active support for global efforts to bring peace and stability to Afghanistan. These statements reflect Kyrgyzstan’s keen awareness of Afghanistan’s pivotal role in regional security. Japarov believes that stability in Afghanistan, given its strategic geopolitical position, directly impacts the security and development of neighboring countries and the broader region.

Nisar Ahmad Shirzai, a political analyst, told TOLOnews: “Central Asian countries, including Kyrgyzstan, clearly understand that regional peace and stability are closely tied to peace in Afghanistan. Afghanistan’s geopolitical position holds significant political, intelligence, and military importance for the security of these nations.” He added that regional cooperation could mitigate security threats and foster stronger economic ties.

Mohammad Zalmai Afghanyar, another political commentator, highlighted the current policies of the Islamic Emirate, suggesting that instead of mere monitoring, regional countries should focus on constructive engagement with Afghanistan. He remarked: “The Islamic Emirate emphasizes non-interference, internal security, and an economy-driven policy. Regional and global actors should seize this opportunity to enhance economic and political cooperation with Afghanistan, enabling it to play a more effective role in global security.”

Kyrgyzstan, following Kazakhstan, became the second regional country to remove the Islamic Emirate from its list of banned organizations on September 5, 2024. This decision signaled Bishkek’s intent to deepen ties with Afghanistan’s caretaker government. Over the past three years, Kyrgyzstan has maintained positive economic relations with the Islamic Emirate, paving the way for enhanced bilateral cooperation. This approach is expected to foster greater regional and international engagement with Afghanistan, contributing to lasting peace and stability in the region.
