Floods in Maidan Wardak and Logar Claim 4 Lives, Displace Hundreds
Heavy rainfall and subsequent flooding in Afghanistan’s Maidan Wardak and Logar provinces have resulted in the tragic loss of four lives, including three children, and left four others injured. The floods have also displaced hundreds of families, causing widespread devastation.
Faizullah Jalali, head of the Natural Disaster Management Authority in Maidan Wardak, reported, “In Nirkh district, one person was killed, and four others were injured due to the floods; they are currently under medical care. Major roads in Chak, Daimirdad, and Nirkh districts were blocked, though some have now been cleared. Approximately 100 livestock were also lost.”
Local authorities in Maidan Wardak and Logar have confirmed that several key roads, previously obstructed by floodwaters, have been reopened. Efforts to provide relief, including food and tents, have been initiated for affected families.
Noorullah Mahmood, head of the Natural Disaster Management Authority in Logar, stated, “We have distributed food and emergency aid to many families. So far, 2,000 families have received assistance, and today, aid distribution continues for an additional 126 families.”
Flood victims have urgently appealed to the caretaker government and humanitarian organizations for support. Amanullah, a resident of Logar, shared, “This was the first time we’ve seen such a massive flood. Some farmers had harvested their wheat, but unharvested crops were swept away, along with vegetables.”
Another resident, Amanuddin, added, “We urgently need food assistance. Many people’s homes have been completely destroyed, leaving them without even a single room to live in. Tents, blankets, and other essentials are desperately needed.”
According to official reports, the floods have devastated over 16,000 jeribs of agricultural land and destroyed approximately 270 homes across Maidan Wardak and Logar, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the region.
