Kabul Pensioners Protest as Unpaid Pensions Deepen Economic Struggles

In Kabul, a group of pensioners has once again taken to the streets to protest the prolonged non-payment of their pensions, highlighting the severe financial hardships they face in their later years.

Having dedicated decades to serving the government, these retirees now find themselves grappling with economic distress and uncertainty.Among them is Abdul Wasi, a former government school teacher who devoted his career to educating Afghanistan’s youth.

Now, as the sole provider for his seven-member family, he struggles to make ends meet without his pension. “Many of us are waiting for our pension payments, but our hope that the Islamic Emirate will address this issue is fading,” Wasi said, voicing the frustration shared by many.Mirwais Salehzada, another pensioner, expressed dismay over unfulfilled promises.

“A decree was issued but never implemented. They told us judges would resolve it, and we waited six months. Now, the General Directorate of Pensions claims they’re waiting for a ‘norm.’ What norm?” he questioned, reflecting the growing exasperation among retirees. The pensioners are demanding immediate payment of their dues, solutions to their economic struggles, and urgent attention from the caretaker government to improve their living conditions. Abdul Hakim, another retiree, pleaded, “We ask the Islamic Emirate and the Amir-ul-Mu’minin to pay our pensions for the sake of God, if not for their own will.”The desperation is palpable in the words of Abdul Khaliq, who said, “Why won’t they pay our pensions?

Is it forbidden? For God’s sake, it’s our right. Even if I die, I won’t forgive this injustice.” Similarly, Mohammad Omar lamented, “Why are they confusing us? We wander the streets all day, seeking our rights.”For nearly four years, these pensioners, who served in various government roles, have received no payments, plunging them into financial despair. They continue to urge the caretaker government for swift action, but the question of when their dues will be paid remains unanswered.
