Tajikistan Deports Afghan Migrants Over Security Concerns

The State Committee for National Security of Tajikistan has announced the initiation of deportations of illegal migrants, particularly Afghan nationals, due to concerns over security and violations of the country’s laws.

This decision follows the identification of cases involving drug trafficking, the use of forged documents, attempts to illegally cross into other countries, and the spread of extremist ideologies among some migrants.

Tajik authorities emphasize that these measures are essential to safeguard national security and enforce immigration regulations.According to reports, an unspecified number of Afghan migrants have already been deported, and the process will continue for those found to have violated Tajikistan’s laws.

The State Committee for National Security has stated that the deportations are being carried out meticulously, based on documented evidence, to avoid any infringement of individual rights. However, this move has raised concerns among migrant communities and human rights organizations.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has stepped in to monitor the process, deploying teams to the Shir Khan Bandar border area to ensure compliance with international standards during the deportations.

The IOM aims to work with Tajik authorities to manage the return of migrants to their home country in a manner that minimizes potential harm. This development comes as Tajikistan has hosted a significant number of Afghan migrants in recent years, many of whom fled Afghanistan due to insecurity and economic hardship.

Nevertheless, Tajik authorities have stressed that any violation of immigration laws or engagement in illegal activities will result in serious consequences for migrants. The deportation process is expected to continue under international oversight to balance national security with the protection of migrant rights.
