Khalilzad: Former Leaders Seek to Repeat Past Mistakes

Zalmay Khalilzad, the former U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation, stated in a message marking the 106th anniversary of Afghanistan’s independence that former political leaders and elites are attempting to reclaim past privileges, a move he believes will lead to repeating previous mistakes.

On Tuesday, August 19, Khalilzad wrote on his X account: “Former leaders and elites, who failed to seize significant opportunities over the past two decades, are now seeking ways to repeat their past mistakes and regain their previous privileges.” He emphasized that “a fundamental shift in perspective is essential.”He noted that Afghanistan has seen relative improvements in security, counter-narcotics efforts, and the implementation of infrastructure projects after decades of conflict.

However, the country continues to grapple with major challenges, including an economic crisis and the deprivation of women and girls from education.Khalilzad had previously criticized a gathering of Afghan politicians in Pakistan, calling it a futile effort.
