Relatives of Herat Incident Victims Demand Thorough Investigation

The Sardar Mohammad Daoud Khan 400-bed Specialized Hospital in Kabul is filled with harrowing stories from the deadly Herat incident.

Families of the victims wait anxiously at the hospital, hoping to receive the bodies, remains, or any trace of their loved ones after identification. Some relatives of the victims are demanding a thorough investigation into the incident.

Yamin Rastin, a relative of the victims, said, “I lost five members of my family. We demand a proper investigation into this incident because it’s said that the bus was carrying far more passengers than allowed.” Najmuddin, another relative, echoed similar concerns, stating, “Attention must be paid to transportation, especially the 580 buses, which are involved in most accidents.

The biggest issue is their negligence—loading a bus meant for 50 passengers with nearly 78 people.”In the tragic Herat incident, all victims were migrants deported from Iran, including women and children.

Some families report that while the bodies of a few of their relatives have been identified, others remain missing.

Farhad, another relative, shared, “According to the records, three bodies from our family have been identified, but five others are still missing.

This includes two children, two women, and one man. They are among the burned remains. We hope their bodies will be handed over to us.”Hospital officials stated that all victims were airlifted to Kabul.

They noted that most of the bodies are unrecognizable and are likely to be buried collectively. The families’ grief is compounded by the uncertainty surrounding their missing loved ones and the lack of accountability for the incident.

The calls for justice and stricter transportation regulations grow louder as relatives seek closure and demand measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
