Sebastian Gorka: The Islamic Emirate, an Unexpected Partner in Counterterrorism
Sebastian Gorka, former Deputy Assistant to President Donald Trump on counterterrorism, made a striking remark about the role of the Islamic Emirate (Taliban) in combating terrorism.
He stated, “It may seem strange, but the Islamic Emirate has, to some extent, been relatively cooperative partners in the fight against terrorism.”Gorka’s comments reflect a nuanced perspective on the Taliban, often viewed as an extremist group opposed to Western values.
He noted that certain extremist groups in Afghanistan pose a threat not only to the international community but also to the Islamic Emirate itself.
These remarks come as Zabihullah Mujahid, the spokesperson for the Islamic Emirate, firmly rejected the UN Security Council’s concerns about terrorist activities in Afghanistan.
Mujahid emphasized that no terrorist groups are currently present in the country, asserting that the security situation is fully under the Emirate’s control.Mujahid highlighted the efforts of the Emirate’s security forces to ensure stability, dismissing international reports about terrorist activities as inaccurate and far from reality.
He explicitly denied the presence of ISIS-Khorasan (ISIS-K), claiming the group has been completely suppressed and eliminated.Gorka likely refers to tactical or indirect cooperation between the Islamic Emirate and foreign powers in suppressing rival groups.
ISIS-K, notorious for its deadly attacks inside and outside Afghanistan, is recognized as a shared threat to both the Taliban and the global community.
The group has sought to expand its influence through suicide attacks and armed operations.Gorka’s statements may suggest an acknowledgment of aligned interests between the Islamic Emirate and certain international actors in countering extremist groups
