SCO Summit: Xi Hosts Putin, Modi in Global South Unity Show

Chinese President Xi Jinping will host Russian President Vladimir Putin, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and over 20 leaders from Central Asia, the Middle East, South Asia, and Southeast Asia at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit.

The event, scheduled for August 31 to September 1, 2025, in the Chinese port city of Tianjin, is set to be a significant display of solidarity among the “Global South,” according to Reuters. It also offers Russia, under heavy international sanctions, an opportunity to secure another diplomatic victory.

The SCO summit serves as a platform for economic, security, and political cooperation among member states, including China, Russia, India, and Central Asian nations.

The gathering is expected to bolster China’s influence among developing nations and strengthen its position against Western dominance.

For Russia, the summit provides a chance to deepen ties with SCO members and showcase resilience amid global isolation. For Narendra Modi, this marks his first visit to China in over seven years, following deadly border clashes in 2020 along the Line of Actual Control in Ladakh.

Recent talks between Indian and Chinese officials have shown progress in resolving border disputes, and this summit could further facilitate bilateral discussions.
