Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar Stresses Continued Aid and Reconstruction for Kunar Earthquake Victims

Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs, during a visit to Kunar province, expressed solidarity with earthquake victims and emphasized the continuation of aid, reconstruction of affected areas, and addressing economic challenges.

Despite limited resources, he noted that timely assistance has been provided and instructed authorities to distribute aid transparently and fairly among those in need.

Sayed Masoud, a university professor, highlighted the severity of the damage, exacerbated by the earthquake’s timing ahead of winter.

He stated, “The great loss suffered by our people was worsened by the international community’s inadequate response. Major countries provided only superficial aid.”The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported that over 134,000 people affected by the deadly Kunar earthquake urgently need assistance.

Miyoung Park, IOM’s head in Afghanistan, warned that many victims are homeless, living in the open, and face severe challenges with winter approaching, especially in mountainous areas. She stressed the need for rapid reconstruction, noting, “We don’t want long-term camps.

People want to rebuild their homes quickly rather than relocate.”Twelve days after the devastating earthquake in Kunar and neighboring provinces, the United Nations announced it has assisted 60,000 affected individuals.

However, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric cautioned that restrictions on women working for the organization are hindering aid delivery.

He urged authorities to lift these restrictions immediately to ensure continued critical support.Afghanistan’s Ministry of Economy also reaffirmed its commitment to ongoing aid efforts.

Abdul Latif Nazari, the ministry’s deputy, stated that international aid is being distributed through charitable organizations and a committee affiliated with the Islamic Emirate.

He added, “We prefer aid to be channeled through the Islamic Emirate for greater effectiveness.”The recent earthquake in Kunar and adjacent provinces caused significant loss of life and substantial financial damage, underscoring the urgent need for reconstruction and sustained support for the affected population.
